Music: The Influence of

People often ask what your favourite type of music is, and many of us can answer with a specific genre or artist. I can’t. And I know of others who can’t as well.

But why? Isn’t it simple to pick? It’s not life or death. Music can’t possibly have such a big influence that someone needs to choose. It’s “not that deep”. Or is it?

Well, maybe you should think about the music you like. There are different songs for different days. What do you listen to when you’re in need of a boost? What about when you’re in a place filled with sadness and want something to relate to?

So then, is music really not that influential?

When we listen to music, we allow the words to sink into our minds. Yes, there is the beat which has become more important than it used to be. Lyrics aren’t what makes a song anymore. We have artists saying words which are sometimes nonsensical. But those words enter our subconscious and can provoke certain thoughts.

You aren't just singing the words, there is something deeper to it.

There is the artist: we will support Drake because he is popular, successful in his industry and has quite a few great songs. There are the words: artists or writers will write about experiences or thoughts of their own. There is the rhythm and beat: this may be the part that gets our attention first. There is you: the chooser of the song, the repeater of the lyrics, the believer (subconsciously) of the message and ideas.

What are your thoughts on this?

  1. Totally agree. We should actually be careful and aware of what we choose to absorb into our subconscious because as a person thinks, so he is or become. And what is inside, comes out somehow, eventually. So we should pump ourselves with good, meaningful music that add good fruit to enrich our lives. Thanks for a good read and something to think about

  2. Breakup songs are my kryptonite. Its is a great example of how a song can meet you where you are in the moment. I need to catch myself sometimes, because that’s not all I want to be listening to.

    Appreciate the wisdom here.
