Self-love, self-care: Choosing yourself and allowing true love

Image
You know those fairytales? Those love stories from movies? Well as you’d think, it’s not real. But what is real is finding someone so well fit for you that you surpass any expectation of a movie. I had been in relationships before (the last one was over 5 years) and I always felt invisible and out of place. But I feel now what it feels like to meet your soul mate. I understand why people want to get married or become life partners. I get how people can wake up to someone and feel excited to see them in the evening even when that is 12 hours away. I  have found true love in its purest form. And yes, honeymoon phase happens. But none of this has ever happened. I feel happy just seein g him. I feel a joy from deep within whenever we have a conversation about any of our passions. I didn’t have a real “list” before, but he meets and exceeds all I thought I would want. The reality of life is that sometimes things happen when you aren’t expecting or wanting it to. And those things may end...

Self-love, self-care: Doing something I enjoy

I write... It's a form of a hobby, an outlet, as well as self-care. At an early age, I was drawn to writing. Whether it was a short story to read in fourth grade, a poem to express myself, a script to a short movie, or just allowing my imagination to run wild. So it turns out that what used to be my hobby, was actually one of my best coping mechanisms. It helped me even when I didn't know I needed it. And of course, even thought subconsciously I knew it was good for me, I strayed from this outlet for a while. These days most self-care coaching will advise you to take up journaling, and I can say that it helps. I just had an idea and flowed with it. And it allowed me to complete a piece in a couple of minutes. It may not be a work of art, but it allowed me to let out some thoughts, express myself. If you want to attempt letting out some feelings, you can try something like the below: Write down words to describe how you feel. Explain what caused these feelings. Write down how ...

Self-love, self-care: Discipline

Image
When we think of this journey, we need to learn to understand what it means. It isn't only comprised of the treats, but the pushing through. It's like that push through when you've engaged in a rigorous workout routine and feel the burn, but decide to continue for the benefits . We all slip up, so that is something normal. What you need to have patience with is discipline, and grace for yourself. Of my 'rules' mentioned before, I too have slipped up/strayed. I worked late and couldn't eat before 7pm. I went for my vaccination and couldn't do a full workout. But I have my plan, and slipping up doesn't mean I have lost control nor that I should call it quits. Push through . So what we need to do is set up a list of things we want to achieve and then a list of ways we plan on getting there. The list will change, maybe after the first two weeks you can become stricter with yourself. We all have separate journeys and differing goals, so it might be that you...

Self-love, self-care: Learning to shut down

Image
My sleep seems to never be enough anymore. I have officially reached burnout. I have been doing more than I should and continuously worrying about the things I would like to change. So I have decided to change what really matters. I offload before I try to unwind. The day's worries are not worth your strength when you can no longer change it. Let go of what has passed. I have started a routine where on the way home from work, I slowly accustom myself to being “done” with work. By the time I get home I feel more at ease, so I can unwind. This weekend I decided to spend time with myself. From watching series on Friday evening, to cleaning and cooking on Saturday. Then an afternoon nap, exercise and a facial pamper session. On Sunday, I followed with a pedicure and spent time with family. And to wrap it up, I set goals for my upcoming week- my renewed journey of self-love. My goals are small; a lesson I've learnt from going big and accomplishing nothing.     1. Unwind from daily ...

Self-love, self-care: Introduction

https://www.sheknows.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/lozzdmc2pstbuxztwuoh.jpeg?w=600 To love oneself is to take care of oneself. When we think of these concepts we often think of something like the picture above; relaxation, pamper. How often do you take time out to relax, unwind and let go? Most likely not enough. Or maybe not in the right way. Caring for yourself goes deeper than the occasional timeout from life where you go for a massage, it's about spending time with yourself. You need to get to know yourself. I have restarted my journey and I am taking a different approach this time. I am not a life coach, but I am a woman who has lost sight of who she is, something I'm sure many can relate to. I stopped recognizing myself in the mirror (obviously face masks, but also the fast-paced day-to-day). I am committing to my journey because I need  it now more than ever before. The life coaches and psychologists are amazing at what they do! But I know that sometimes seeing someo...

How to be present

https://i0.wp.com/www.additudemag.com/  Do you ever drift off while having a conversation, studying, attending a meeting, or training session? Well, I do. There is just too much going on and we are very distracted, We miss out on so many moments that we can never get back. We add no value to the conversations we partake in because we are too busy elsewhere. Here's a few things you can try:      1. Improve your listening skills Listen to a song or podcast an...

Our part in decreasing overdose and suicide rates

Michael K Williams was an award winning actor. Moving from being a temp at Pfizer, to the the fame we knew him for. Unfortunately, he overdosed on fentanyl. Fentanyl is a very powerful opiod. It is used to relieve excruciating pain, and is common in overdose cases in America. This was a guy who, on TV, seemed to be happy. Seemed to have had life figured out. But what happened shows that life is life. There are struggles that even fame, money and a new path can’t solve. If you look deeper into his past, you will see that he had troubles in his earlier years. He tried to walk a different path, to leave the baggage behind. But it is never that easy. He needed help. And we will never know if anyone ever tried hard enough. So imagine your friend who has been struggling with issues - maybe money related. A friend of mine once said that “famous people have a tough life, they always die of overdoses or something horrible”. And it’s true: even the rich and famous have issues. So why do we ...
